Today I learned that another iconic artist from my childhood has made her transition.
Mary Travers of Peter, Paul & Mary passed away yesterday. Beloved grandmother, mother and wife.
She was singing partner with Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey. They had a string of hits in the early 60s. Mary was born in my hometown of Louisville, KY. Her parents moved the family to Greenwich Village where she began singing with the Weavers and founding member Pete Seeger. It was there she met Yarrow and Stookey and they formed PP&M. It has been stated that "they were true to their liberal beliefs while creating music that resonated in the American mainstream."
Take a look at the list of iconic hits they created.
Lemon Tree
500 Miles
Where Have All The Flowers Gone
If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)
Puff (The Magic Dragon)
Blowin' in the Wind
I Dig Rock and Roll Music
Leaving on a Jet Plane written by John Denver.
Peter, Paul & Mary really did bring change in the 60's.
Click on the links and listen to Mary along with Peter and Paul sing the songs that are indelibly woven into the fabric of our collective consciousness. In one article I read, the author states that he believes that their songs will be remembered long after all of us are gone. I have to agree. We love you Mary.
